After three and a half years, Nanaimo’s Femme Fatales will return to their “home gig” at the Queen’s for a special Halloween show this coming weekend.

And although Jona Kristinsson, drummer and vocalist, said she’s keeping their setlist a secret for now, they plan to play some new songs for fans to enjoy.

“Our fan base ranges from literally five year olds to 100 year olds, because the musical genres that we cover with our medleys is so vast that we take it anywhere from the Beatles to brand-new stuff,” she said. “We tend to do a lot of medleys because we have so many influences … There’s so much that I want to cover.”

Two members will be missing from the Queen’s gig, as keyboardist Sydney Needham is on maternity leave and guitarist Stewart McLellan is touring in Germany. Filling in will be Nathan McKay from Johnny Inappropriate and Bob Moffatt who’s appeared in Wunderbread.

Kristinsson said the Halloween show is part of the group’s return to live indoor performances since “COVID changed everything” the past several years.

“We’re really just trying to remind people to support live music and artists in Nanaimo … The numbers fluctuate nowadays and are less predictable, as to knowing how many people will actually show up for a show,” she said. “Us musicians, we’re just hanging on to the hope that we never, ever go back to where we used to be … So we’re hoping to see a really good turnout.”

The band will also hold a costume contest with $500 total in prizes for first, second and third place.

“People are so creative when it comes to costumes … Some scour the internet and find really cool costumes and others stay at home and make the best costumes. It’s unbelievable what people pull off sometimes,” Kristinsson said, adding that judges will be looking at the amount of effort people put into their creations.

The Femme Fatales’ Halloween show will start at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.

And although Kristinsson is recovering from a recently broken arm, she said she’s “still rocking it” and ready to take on Saturday’s show.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance through www.myzonetickets.com, or at the door on the day.
