One of Canada’s oldest continuously operating community concert bands is preparing for its fall concert.

The Nanaimo Concert Band will perform at the Port Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 3.

The band has been in the city since 1872 and is 50 members strong.

For this year's fall concert, the musicians prepare to offer a night of dance-themed music. Music director John Churchley said the concert will focus on social dances including cultural music, as well as old-fashioned and polka pieces.

“We still have a variety of show tunes, a bit of classical band stuff, some marches so it is your traditional band literature, just with a bit of a theme to it,” he said.

Along with the fall concert, the band will perform a Remembrance Day concert and Christmas concert this year.

“There is always a great variety. We have a great audience that I think is pretty loyal to the band and they know what to expect. We always have some fun light stuff, we will have the marches, we will have show tunes, we will have movie tunes, the odd novelty number but we will also have a few classical traditional band pieces as well that shows off the skills of the band so there’s really something for everybody,” Churchley said.

The fall concert is on Sunday, Nov. 3. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at www.porttheatre.com.
