Nanaimo choir draws on water themes

Island Consort Choir performs at Brechin United Church

A choir specializing in early music pays homage to First Nations.

Island Consort director Bruce Farquharson combined a first half of classical and sacred works prior to a second set of song which explore the mystique of water. Throughout the concert are themes of the cosmos.

Included in the selections are Pachelbel’s Magnificat and Locus Iste, by Paul Mealor, who wrote for last year’s royal wedding. Four songs attributed to First Nations by Canadian composers include Salish Song, Earth Teach Me, Nootka Paddle Song and the Great Sea.

Organist Peter Orme and players from the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra accompany the 20-voice choir.

The concert, Of Water and the Cosmos, is set for Sunday (April 29), 7:30 p.m., at Brechin United Church. Admission $15 at the door.
