Denise Tierney’s ‘Recollection’ will show at the Chapel Gallery until May 15

Nanaimo artist Denise Tierney is exhibiting her latest series of work, ‘Recollection,’ in a practice rooted in memory, history, ritual and tradition.

The exhibit will be held at the Chapel Gallery in Victoria, run from May 6-15, and include Tierney’s works across a wide range of media in two-dimensional and sculptural artwork.

“She considers the transience of life and examines how experiences shape our identity,” noted a release for the show.

In an artist statement, Tierney said her artistic practice is “fuelled by a curiosity of human behaviour and the experiences of exchange… I consider whether our global modern world is still anchored by tradition and culture and I examine the role of nostalgia.”

Some of the materials used in her artwork include discarded photos from thrift stores, vintage shops and old family albums.

Tierney works out of Pentimenti Art Studio in Nanaimo as a full-time studio artist, and has a degree in visual art from Vancouver Island University.

Exhibition hours for ‘Recollection’ in Victoria will be from 12-4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 12-3 p.m. on Sundays.

Further information on the exhibit can be obtained via e-mail through chapelgallery600@gmail.com.
