A Nanaimo thespian will appear in a ‘play within a play,’ taking on the role of an actress in an adaptation of a classic children’s story.

Alexandra Brynn will portray the role of Sandra playing Wendy in Peter Pan Goes Wrong for the Arts Club Theatre at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in Vancouver from Sept. 8-Oct. 16.

The production is the play’s second North American run after the first was held at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre this past winter.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong, a comedy by Mischief Theatre first presented 11 years ago in London, U.K., is a spin on the classic tale by J.M. Barrie where “everything that can go wrong, does” for the amateur actors in the play.

Brynn said the show takes place during the opening night of the amateur company’s production and she is sure the audience will enjoy the difficulties the cast and crew encounter.

“You also get to see the relationship between the actors and how their drama feeds into the story and pushes the whole plot along,” she said.

She initially auditioned for the play in 2019, with the premiere planned for early 2020; however, due to COVID safety restrictions, the stage curtains didn’t officially lift in Edmonton until late February this year.

Because of the physicality of the show involving a cast of 13, Brynn said it was impossible to rehearse if they couldn’t physically be in the same room, and have only been able to do so since January.

“This show is super physical – set pieces fall apart, there’s actors flying around the stage,” she said.

Brynn first “fell in love” with the comedic stylings of Mischief Theatre when she saw their The Play that Goes Wrong while attending drama school in the U.K. Upon her return to British Columbia in 2019, she immediately seized the opportunity to be a part of their story when the Arts Club and the Citadel Theatre announced they would produce Peter Pan Goes Wrong.

“I was extremely excited when I got the part because it bridges the gap between my English sensibilities and my Canadian sensibilities,” she said.
