Music education continues with spring break workshop

Musical theatre, songwriting classes available for students

Students who love singing have an opportunity to hone their craft during a spring break workshop.

From March 14-25, Doug Dodd leads the workshops at Headliners School of Performing Arts.

The first workshop, for students age nine and older, runs March 14-18, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in musical theatre and performance.

Students will learn from Dodd, Joelle Rabu, Nico Rhodes and Alexandria Maillot about solo and chorus singing, breathing techniques for maximum power and efficiency, and delivery and character development. The course leads up to a performance with musicians, sound system and lights.

Cost is $250, which includes music, lyric sheets, rehearsal CDs and snacks.

The second workshop, March 21-25, 2-6 p.m., is a singer-songwriter workshop aimed at students age 12 and older. Maillot, Rhodes and Dodd will take students through popular songwriting, while enhancing performance and presentation skills. Students will write and develop songs individually and with their peers under the guidance of the instructors.

Students should bring their own instruments but an electric piano, music stands, amps and bass will be supplied. Cost is $250 and includes paper, pencils and snacks.

To register or for more information, please call Dodd at 250-741-8857 or e-mail doug@joellerabu.com.
