Library seeking adventurous teens

Gabriola Island’s library is calling on adventurous teens.

The island’s Vancouver Island Regional Library branch is holding a video contest called Gabriola VID X.

Librarian Jason Kuffler said those in the Nanaimo regional area between the ages of 12 to 19 can submit a short video of themselves engaged in an outdoor sport.

“They can submit a maximum 10 minute video of them or their friends doing an action sport. So, skateboarding, mountain biking, surfing, whatever they do,” Kuffler said.“It doesn’t have to be edited but if they add music and it’s edited then that’s a bonus.”

Teens can enter by burning their video onto a CD and dropping it off, or by e-mailing a video file.

“They can drop it [the CD] off at their nearest VIRL branch with instructions to send it to the Gabriola Island Library and it will be sent at no cost,” Kuffler said.

There will also be a viewing party on March 15 at the Gabriola Island library from 2 to 4 p.m., where the winner will be announced. There will be prizes for the top submissions.

Kuffler is hoping to garner enough interest from teens to eventually start a digital editing club at the library.

“The most difficult thing for a library to do is attract teens that don’t normally use the library and show them that it is a cool place to come. That’s the whole purpose of this,” Kuffler said. “One of my goals is to get enough interest in making videos so that I could start a monthly teen drop in where we get together and edit videos.”

The deadline to enter VID X is March 14. Submissions can be dropped off at any VIRL branch or e-mailed to jkuffler@virl.bc.ca.
