Improvisation that focuses on narrative is an art form that provides the opportunity for a person to develop themselves on many different levels. It’s far more than just having the ability to jump up on stage with friends and make some entertaining stuff up.
Ladysmith Secondary School improv students will take to the stage to show their best-on-the-Island talents at a fundraiser next week as they eye national championships next month.
The locals won the regional championship in Courtenay last month, putting them in position to be one of more than a dozen teams from across Canada who have the chance to compete in the national finals in Ottawa from April 5-8.
“This group of young adults shows the strength and passion to move all the way up the ladder,” said William Taylor, Ladysmith Secondary School teacher.
The trip to Canada’s capital is pricey, with the team looking to raise approximately $12,000. In Ottawa, the group’s days will be filled with workshops to build their skills, expand their passion, and meet like-minded professional improvisers and students. In the evening they will perform and compete for the national title.
“Improv is a wonderful vehicle for leadership development, whether it’s self-leadership or leadership of others, as it imparts crucial life skills that every person needs,” Taylor said.
The fundraiser happens Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m. at the LSS multi-purpose room, with doors opening at 6:30. p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
All donations will generate a tax-deductible receipt from Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools. Donors can access a direct link to School District 68 donation site or people can write a cheque payable to SD 68 with reference to LSS improv team in the subject line.
