The Ladysmith Little Theatre is presenting its production of John Patrick’s A Bad Year for Tomatoes starting this week.
The play follows Myra Marlowe, an actress who moves to a small hamlet in New England to write her autobiography and deals with her “nosy, omnipresent neighbours.”
Mort Paul, the show’s director, said the play was put together in nine weeks, and features seven local actors who’ve all performed at the theatre before.
According to Paul, several nights are already sold out and he couldn’t believe the appeal.
“It’s a basic, simple comedy,” he said. “It’s basic format – like in a sitcom, they have one character who is sane, and everyone around her is insane and she’s just trying to make sense of the world.”

The director joined the theatre as the artistic director in 2005 after being a high school drama teacher. This is the first play he’s directed since 2020 following a “COVID hiatus.”
The production will be staged from Thursday, April 27, to May 14, with showtimes at 7:30 p.m. from Thursdays to Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $20 for theatre members and $25 for non-members. For more information, visit http://www.ladysmiththeatre.com.
