A Nanaimo tribute band is anxious to get back on the stage for a series of “powerful performances.”

The Joe Cocker Experience is in the midst of series of shows on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland and is inviting Nanaimo music fans to a concert April 16 at the Port Theatre. The nine-piece band is meant to be a re-creation of the group Cocker played with on his final tour in 2013 and features Larry Brennan as lead singer backed by Kristi Kell and Cindy Goebel, Daryl Marklinger on guitar, Ron McKee on bass, Gerry Pool on drums, Rick McDonough playing piano, Earle Gibson handling organ and trombone and Claudio Fantinato on saxophone.

“Larry Brennan’s voice is so close to the real Joe Cocker it’s uncanny – close your eyes and you’ll swear you’re hearing the real deal,” noted a press release from the band.

The group says, as well, that the backing vocals are “magic,” the guitar is “awe-inspiring,” the piano is “possessed,” the trombone and organ are masterful, the sax commands attention, and the bass and drums “drive the pulse and feel” of the show.

The Joe Cocker Experience will play hits like With a Little Help From My Friends, Leave Your Hat On and the Letter, to name a few.

“The music is all Cocker, and sung like only Joe could…” the release noted. “Come and see the show – you will be entertained.”

WHAT’S ON … The Joe Cocker Experience plays the Port Theatre on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, visit www.porttheatre.com.
