A New York-based trumpet player will work with Nanaimo music students ahead of a concert at Beban Park.

Terell Stafford headlines the annual Jazz Affair, which raises money for local music programs, education and equipment, Friday (May 27).

Stafford currently plays with the Grammy Award-winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. On the list of his extensive jazz credentials is playing on Diana Krall’s 2006 album From This Moment On.

At this year’s Harlem-themed Jazz Affair, Stafford will play with Brad Turner on piano, Jesse Cahill on drums and Ken Lister on bass.

Entertainment also includes the big band sound of Decadence and the senior bands and combos from Wellington Secondary School’s music program.

Kirkwood Dance Academy and a combo from Dover Bay Secondary School will also perform.

Dinner will be available for purchase from caterer Mrs. Riches and a silent auction will help boost fundraising totals.

Money raised from the event, produced by Friends of Nanaimo Jazz Society, goes to music clinics, featuring world-class musicians like Stafford, instrument purchases, scholarships and band camp bursaries for Nanaimo jazz students.
