Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver will play a show in Nanaimo in celebration of the release for his latest album, Ryan Oliver With Strings.

Oliver’s May 22 show takes place at Simonholt, 6582 Applecross Rd., and will start at 7:30 p.m.

According to a release for the show, a string quartet will accompany Oliver along with his own jazz quartet – including keyboardist Tony Genge, bassist Ken Lister and drummer Hans Verhoeven.

“Oliver steeped his concept and artistry in the creative fires of Amsterdam, honed his craft in Toronto and realized his dream of joining thousands of saxophonists at crowded jam sessions for several years in the jazz metropolis of New York City before returning to B.C. and the natural beauty of Vancouver Island,” noted the release.

“For over 15 years, Oliver toured the world with legendary Canadian jazz group the Shuffle Demons along with performing with a ‘who’s who’ of the Canadian jazz scene. His saxophone tone and musical world reflect the uniqueness of these scenes and his musical journey.”

Tickets for the May 22 show are priced at $25 for general admission, $15 for students. They are available at Simonholt, 250-933-3338, Fascinating Rhythm, 250-716-9997, and Arbutus Music, 250-933-1900.
