The Island Bel Canto Singers love singing and they want to share their love for the vocal expression with as many people as possible. On April 27 the Island Bel Canto Singers will showcase their joy for singing during a performance at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre.

Island Bel Canto Singers communications director Laurene Coleman explained that the concert, which is titled “It Sings in Me” expresses the joys of singing and making music.

"Singing as part of a group is a pretty special experience because you become part of something that is larger than yourself. There is a real connection made amongst all the people that are singing," Coleman said. "When you sing well and you're expressing emotion there is just so much satisfaction and pleasure in doing that."

The Island Canto Singers will be led by recently appointed artistic director Sharon Sinclair.

"She's a very well regarded musician in Nanaimo as a vocal teacher, as a choir director and as a singer herself. We're just really excited to be having our first concert with Sharon," Coleman said.

The Island Canto Singer's Chamber Choir will also feature young vocalists from Nanaimo District Secondary School, Maireid Reid and Micalla Wallace. Both girls recently won awards at the Upper Island Music Festivals and represented Nanaimo at the Provincial level of the British Columbia Festival of the Arts.

"These girls are students of our director Sharon Sinclair. The Island Bel Canto Singers have made it a practice as much as possible over the years to provide a showcase for aspiring musicians, whether it be singers or performers of other kinds. We get a lot of pleasure out of giving performance opportunities to talented young people."

Island Bel Canto Singers will perform at Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre, 6234 Spartan Rd., on Sunday (April 27) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 dollars and kids under 12 are free. More information at http://www.islandbelcanto.com/index.html
