The Royal B.C. Museum is inviting First Nations community members from across the province to contribute to the spring issue of Curious.

Curious is a magazine created by the Royal B.C. Museum and each issue usually explores a theme.

The spring theme is belonging. Staff at the museum would like to help people explore their family history. The museum is interested in submissions that “reflect the diverse range of experience that B.C. First Nations community members have when visiting the Royal B.C. Museum collections,” according to the museum’s press release.

The museum asks the question: What does it mean to find yourself, your family and your community in the Royal B.C. Museum and Archives collections even if you have never set foot inside the walls?

Contributions can be articles, personal narratives, interviews, creative non-fiction, poetry, digital arts, sound or video.

The magazine’s guest editor, Francine Cunningham, an indigenous writer, artist and educator who lives in Vancouver, will work with people from the idea stage to the finished piece.

Cunningham graduated from the University of British Columbia from the master of fine arts program with a specialization in creative writing.

In 2014, she participated in the Indigenous Writing Studio at the Banff Arts Centre and placed second in the Our Story: Aboriginal Arts and Stories contest.

She also works with youths to help them learn how to combine writing and art to express issues surrounding their identity as indigenous youths in Canada.

Greg Younging is the project senior advisor. Younging is the managing editor of Theytus Books, a publishing company founded by and for indigenous writers.

The deadline to express interest in participating is Sunday (Jan. 15). People are asked to e-mail cunningham.curious@gmail.com with their name, contact information and a brief description of their idea.

The museum will select 20 submissions and chosen participants will receive a small honorarium for their contribution.
