An artist whose work explores concepts of identity, cycles of life and death and spiralling time will be exhibited at Vancouver Island University for seven weeks, starting today.

In a release for the exhibit, Taryn Walker is described as a queer, interdisciplinary Indigenous artist of Nlaka’pamux, Syilx and mixed European ancestry, who will show ‘Echoes From a Time Not Yet Here’ at VIU’s View Gallery from Thursday, Feb. 16, until April 7.

The artist will bring their imagination, compassion and sensitive touch to the exhibit which features drawings preserved in wax, large-scale wall drawings and video and field recordings.

“Walker’s multimedia, multidimensional expressions reflect a deep sensitivity and powerful groundedness that create space for us to pause, to breath, to listen. The fantastical figures they conjure out of the ethers reverberate for us with positive, forward-looking visions for our collective possibility,” noted the release.

Having graduated from the University of Victoria in 2018 with a bachelor of fine arts, Walker is currently working on their master of fine arts at Simon Fraser University in interdisciplinary contemporary arts.

An opening reception for ‘Echoes From a Time Not Yet Here’ will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 5-7 p.m., followed by an artist talk on Friday, Feb. 17 at noon in Building 356, Room 109 at Nanaimo campus.
