Injury forces replacement
Pianist Devon Joiner will replace Andre Laplante at Monday’s (Feb. 7) concert at the Port Theatre.
Laplante suffered a hand injury and was forced to cancel the Nanaimo show. Joiner, originally from Nanaimo, is studying at Juilliard school of music in New York.
The concert is a fundraiser for the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. Tickets will be honoured at the Joiner concert or people may ask for a refund.

Kerplunks earn Juno Award nod
The Kerplunks, the children’s musical group from Gabriola Island, scored a third Juno Award nomination for their third album Number 3.
The group earned the nomination in the Children’s Album of the Year category, announced Tuesday.
Also earning a Juno Award nomination is former Nanaimo musician Christine Jensen and her jazz orchestra for their album Treelines. The album was nominated for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year.
The Juno Awards are the biggest awards ceremony for the Canadian music industry. The awards, celebrating a 40-year anniversary, will be given out in Toronto on March 27.
Writer receives poetry prize
A Nanaimo poet won second prize in a national poetry contest.
Kamal Parmar, who recently published a collection of her poems called Fleeting Shadows, placed second in the National Poetry Contest, hosted by the Poetry Institute of Canada.
Her poem will be included in Island Mists, an anthology published by the institute.
