Brigadoon dancers will reel onstage during the annual Pride of Scotland show.

“There is a lot of Celtic choreography, traditional Scottish steps, some to traditional music and some to more upbeat songs,” said Diena Henry, principal instructor for Brigadoon Dance Academy.

This year the show has moved to Malaspina Theatre. It was previously held at the Port Theatre.

Henry said the academy is working on growing its audience.

The show features both recreational dancers, who practise about once a week, and championship dancers, who practise up to five times a week.

The performers range in ages from two years old to adults. The show also features performances from bagpipers and Fiddelium will play a pre-show concert.

The year-end production will include traditional jigs, reels and hornpipes and some new choreography integrating traditional Scottish highland dances and other dance genres such as tap and jazz.

Henry said the dancers are excited to share their creations with the audience.

Henry said she loves Scottish Highland dancing because it’s tied to her roots.

“I have heritage tied to it with a great grandfather from Scotland,” said Henry. “I just love the tradition of it. Some steps date back to the world war and these steps are still being done today. We are keeping them alive today, so it’s very neat.”

Pride of Scotland is Sunday (June 12) at Malaspina Theatre. There is a pre-show performance by Fiddelium at 2 p.m. and the dancers perform at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and are available in advance by calling 250-754-8550 or online at www.porttheatre.com.

“Tickets are limited so please buy them in advance,” said Henry.
