Good things happening for band from Quadra

Alone in a room with a guitar is where music happens.

It’s not in the recording studio or in meetings with a record label deciding how best to market an album.

“It’s antithesis from what music is supposed to do,” said Ryan Guldemond, from the band Mother Mother.

The quintet built their reputation on originality, sounding different from other pop music acts today.

Their fans encourage the band to stay original, innovative and not conform to what business interests may want, said Guldemond.

“Those things do conflict,” he said. “That’s not to say it influences anything.”

The band was faced with the choice to disengage from the debate or to succumb to its wishes.

“We’ve decided to disengage,” Guldemond said. “The more you know about the industry the less you care.”

The new album, Eureka, to be released next month, is a departure for the band from their previous albums in that it’s less folky and less sombre, said Guldemond.

“It harkens back to the more playful aspects of our first record,” he said.

The goal was a bold, tougher album with a hi-fi modern-sounding feel, said Guldemond, who also produced the record.

Guldemond and his sister, Molly, who also performs in the band, grew up on Quadra Island. Their mom encouraged the study of music, beginning with piano lessons.

“I was drawn to music naturally,” he said. “That’s the best way to like something is without explanation.”
