Gabriola’s New Society Publishers is continuing to take strides to become more environmentally and socially responsible.

The publisher recently received its B Corp Certification, which is awarded by the non-profit B Lab.

It recognizes for-profit businesses that meet rigourous standards of social and environmental performance while being accountable and transparent.

“When writers have something meaningful to say about sustainability, it’s important for them to have a publisher who supports their philosophy,” said Judith Plant, a co-founder of New Society Publishers, in a press release.

More than 1,600 companies are certified B Corps in more than 40 countries.

In 2015 the publishing company became an employee-owned business.

In 2005 New Society became the first North American book publishing company to become carbon neutral, according to the organization’s press release.

Since 2001 the company has published titles on acid-free paper that is Forest Stewardship Council certified, 100 per cent old growth forest-free, 100 per cent post-consumer recycled, processed chlorine free and printed with vegetable-based low VOC inks, according to the organization’s press release.
