Fundraiser offsets cancer costs

Nanaimo musicians are rallying for one of their own to help raise money to cover expenses related to cancer treatment.

Nanaimo musicians are rallying for one of their own to help raise money to cover expenses related to cancer treatment.

Jenna Flor, from the bands Bossa Loca and Terrazetto, is the recipient of the fundraiser, which will help pay for travel costs for radiation treatment as well as supplemental alternative natural therapies.

Growing up in Britain, Flor studied classical violin and piano before picking up the nylon string guitar in her teens. She developed a passion for Brazilian and Latin music.

At age 17, she spent a year in Paris busking in the Metro, initially earning enough for breakfast until her playing improved and she moved on to Boulevard St. Michelle and croque monsieur.

She busked through Turkey, Kabul, Greece, Kashmir and Delhi before landing in Canada, settling in the Nanaimo area in 1995.

Lending their talent to help Flor are Anna Acevedo Lyman and her ukulele group Jazzalele; Linda Walker jazz ensemble with Marty Howe; Dan Miron with Charlo; Terrazetto; and the Big Mess with Marty Shepard and VoxMan Kyle.

The concert is set for June 26, 7 p.m., at Diners Rendezvous. Admission is by minimum donation of $15. For information, please call 250-740-1133.
