There are few people who have logged as many kilometres exploring Vancouver Island’s vast coast as author and kayaker John Kimantas.

“I don’t want to build myself up as a great adventurer and explorer,” Kimantas said. “I’ve gone a lot of places and I’ve done a lot of things and I’ve put on a lot of miles.”

Over the last 15 years, Kimantas, a former newspaper editor, has kayaked and explored everywhere from Cape Scott to Victoria.

On July 23, Kimantas will be sharing his stories and talking about his newly released guidebook, The B.C. Coast Explorer Vol. 2, at the North Nanaimo Library at 6:30 p.m.

The B.C. Coast Explorer is an in-depth and updated guidebook that covers numerous regions including the Juan de Fuca Strait, Saanich Islands, Gulf Islands, Ballenas-Winchelsea Archipelago, Denman and Hornby Islands and Comox Harbour.

The book, an updated version of Volume 1, also provides information about camping locations, trails, waterways and includes updated maps.

“Basically it is a point-by-point, cove-by-cove look at the history, ecology, features, attractions and amenities,” Kimantas said.
