Residents of the Harbour City have the chance to show off their artistic side, thanks to one local business owner’s efforts.

On Friday (May 16) Iron Oxide Art Supplies is hosting the first-ever Nanaimo Art Bomb, an event that encourages residents to bring their easels, or anything that they can create art with, and start painting.

The event will be held in front of the art store at Pioneer Square Park from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Iron Oxide owner, Willow Friday, explained that the event is designed to highlight the Nanaimo’s artistic side.

“I thought it would be really awesome to invite people out and show this really artistic side of our town,” Friday said. “It is basically an open call, guerrilla style, where people can come out and are encouraged to come and hang out and find a spot downtown [and create art].”

The event coincides with the arrival of a large cruise ship, which is expected to be carrying over 2,000 passengers and slated to port in Nanaimo early Friday morning.

Art Bomb is a free event that is open to anyone of all ages and artistic skill levels.
