Nanaimo musician Gerry Barnum is offering a sneak peek of his latest album during a concert at the Diner’s Rendezvous Friday (Feb. 11).

Step on In was recorded in the fall at Lois Lane Recording Studios with the backing of an all-star band, which included Pat Steward, Doug Elliott and Darcy Phillips. Tina Jones, on vocals, and Nick Hornbuckle, on banjo, are also featured on the new disc.

Life-changing events over the past few years, such as the death of his father and his marriage to his wife, Sarah, influenced the songs on the new album.

“It’s always been life and experience that’s shaped my songs more than anything else,” Barnum said.

“The album is more reflective of where I’m at maturity wise, you know? It’s all about growth, change, understanding and appreciating this life.”

Some songs are new, while others are from years past, including Gotta Get Back Home, the last song Barnum wrote as a single guy.

Although the songs stand up on their own with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, which has been the foundation of Barnum’s work, the backing band gives the songs a great backdrop and a nice set of legs to stretch out and groove.

Performing songs from Step on It with Barnum at the Rendezvous show are Carl Cowley on bass; Darcy Phillips on piano; and Brad Hawkes on percussion.

People will be able to take home some of the concert as Barnum is making several songs available for download if guests bring flash drives to the show.

Tickets are $25/advance from the Rendezvous. Showtime is 9 p.m.
