Following the release of his latest single, Nanaimo’s self-described “coastal folk” singer-songwriter tours the Island through bars, cafés and breweries this month.

With three Victoria performances already in the bag, Spencer Hiemstra celebrates the Jan. 6 release of Ordinary People with seven more appearances through the central Island and west coast of the Island.

Ordinary People is the artist’s second release, following July’s Kindness, as he prepares for a new album.

“The song is about this myth that there is such a thing as an ordinary person,” said Hiemstra in a release for the tour. “I don’t believe anyone is ordinary and I believe we should all be reminded how important we all are.”

Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Hiemstra has taken his music across Canada and played several festival stages along the way, noted the release. His unique brand of music offers a glimpse at his own life through storytelling, as revealed in his 2020 debut album Wildlife.

According to the release, Heimstra has teamed up with Victoria-based singer songwriter Aaron Wylder for the tour, and the two will play the 40 Knots Winery in Comox on Jan. 19, the Clove on Quadra Island on Jan. 20, Beach Fire Brewing Company in Campbell River on Jan. 25, the Nanaimo Bar in Nanaimo on Jan. 27, Fern and Cedar Brewing Company in Qualicum on Jan. 28, Char’s Landing Hall and Hostel in Port Alberni on Jan. 29 and Ucluelet Brewing Company in Ucluelet on Jan. 30.

The Jan. 27 show at the Nanaimo Bar starts at 9:30 p.m. with $10 cover at the door.
