Nanaimo Clippers goaltender Evan Johnson gets into position to make a save as teammate Adam Pilotte defends on the play during B.C. Hockey League against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks last Sunday at Frank Crane Arena. This Saturday (Jan. 30) the team heads off the ice and into the Nanaimo North Library for a literacy event.

The Nanaimo Clippers are heading off the ice and into the carpeted aisles of the Nanaimo North Library to promote literacy.

The BCHL junior A hockey team players will read some of their favourite books during Score with Reading, a partnership program with the Vancouver Island Regional Library that began in 2012 to engage young or reluctant readers.

The event is Saturday (Jan. 30), 1-3 p.m. at the Nanaimo North Library. Readings start at 1 p.m. and if weather permits there will be a street hockey game with attendees and Clipper players in the library's parking lot. Tales the Whale, the regional library's mascot, will also be attending and will be wearing its new VIRL hockey sweater.

The program aims at educating youths about the importance of balancing physical activity and literacy. It is free and open to all ages. No registration is required.
