Nanaimo is looking to celebrate its next sports and arts and culture champions.

According to a release, the city is looking to recognize individuals or groups who were awarded international, national, Western Canadian or provincial first-place honours in sport, arts or culture in 2022.

Recipients must be residents of Nanaimo, have placed or received the highest ranking in their field and be in an amateur activity unrelated to their livelihood. Applications can be submitted until Jan. 22.

“Every victory and every winning performance by one of Nanaimo’s athletes, teams or performing artists brings home more than just a gold medal or shiny trophy; it also brings home a great sense of pride and recognition, while leaving behind a positive Nanaimo vibe on provincial, national and even international stages. Council is honoured to acknowledge and celebrate these outstanding achievements,” said Coun. Tyler Brown in the release.

Civic Sport Merit Awards and Arts and Culture Merit Awards will be presented as certificates of congratulations and medallions in the coming weeks at a city council meeting.

Further nomination information can be found online www.nanaimo.ca.
