Ceramic artist Sarah Leckie explores the transition into being a mom during naptime in her latest exhibit at Nanaimo Ceramic Arts.
According to a release by NCA, Leckie will show ‘Naptime Vocation’ at the studio and gallery on Wallace Street from Sept. 30-Oct. 16, with a reception held opening day from 6-8 p.m.
“Space, time and the constraints of motherhood seeped into Sarah’s work while she was busy making pottery,” noted the release. “This observation for Sarah let her lean into this imagery of organic monsters.”
For ‘Naptime Vocation,’ Leckie was able to find precious studio time, often within the hours her child was sleeping, to create emotive ceramic beings and tile painting. The exhibit loosely explores her transition into her “new ambiguous identity” as ‘mom’ while being oversaturated and underslept.
“It’s a million little hands and creatures all over everything. It’s new [clay] bodies. It’s chaotic and fun and doesn’t entirely make perfect sense,” noted the release.
