Bellydancers host annual bazaar

NANAIMO - Dancers from around the Island are performing during the fourth annual Bellydance Bazaar Saturday (June 22).

Bellydancers are swaying their hips for a good cause Saturday (June 22).

Dancers from around the Island are performing during the fourth annual Bellydance Bazaar and Solstice Spirit Dance Party at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall.

“Last year we saw dancers from Victoria to Campbell River and they wowed the audience made up of bellydancers and the general public,” said Lynette Harper, in a press release. “This year even more professional dancers, teachers and students have been generous in donating performances.”

The bazaar features vendors selling costumes, street wear, jewelry and accessories from around the world. There will be palm and tarot card readings and food for sale.

There is also a morning workshop led by professional dancer and teacher Rahma Haddad. She’ll lead a session of Zar, a ritualistic dance that originated in North Africa, from 10-11:30 a.m.

This year is the first the Solstice Spirit Celebration is being held. It features Middle Eastern and Romani dances.

“St. Paul’s Church Hall will be transformed once again into a whirl of colour, sound and savory smells,” said Harper.

The Bellydance Bazaar is from 1-5 p.m. Admission is $5 and kids are free. The Solstice Spirit Dance Party 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $10. The event is a fundraiser for the Haven Society.na
