An award-winning Swedish saxophonist will make a performance for a special concert at the Queen’s this week.
Mats Gustafsson returns to Nanaimo with his combo Fire, a Nordic experimental super group, for a show on June 30 at 9 p.m.
Gustafsson is the recipient of the Swedish Royal Academy of Music Large Prize in Jazz and two-time Jazz Artist of the Year who made his debut in Nanaimo, noted a release for the show. He returns to town, accompanied by Andreas Werlin on drums and Johan Berthling on bass guitar.
“Fire has been stretching musical boundaries since 2009 with a combination of improvised jazz, psychedelia and noise,” noted the release.
According to the release, Nanaimo’s Moths and Locusts are one of Gustafsson’s favourite Canadian bands, and by request, have been added to the bill.
Also performing will be Shearing Pinx, described in the release as on “the edge of experimental indie rock.”
