Award-winning author Lynne Bowen will be appearing at the Nanaimo Museum to launch her latest book, Those Island People, on Monday (Feb. 17) from 3-5 p.m. Those Island People is a collection of stories about relatively unknown residents of Vancouver Island and their unique stories.
"The Nanaimo Museum is pleased to publish Lynne Bowen's new book," Manager of the Nanaimo Museum, Debbie Trueman said in a press release. "We have worked closely with Lynne for many years and regularly refer to her books for exhibit and program research."
Bowen's newest book, Those Island People was inspired by a monthly column that she wrote for the Victoria Times Colonist 10-years ago. Her column was often devoted to a particular person who lived on the Island but whose story was not widely known. These include stories of about gold seekers, gamblers, former slaves, veteran soldiers, missionaries and rabble rousers. Bowen also found many of the stories while she was researching other projects.
"I discovered the story of Ted and Evelyn Wardroper while researching a book on Robert Dunsmuir," Lynne Bowen said in a press release. "Evelyn lived most of her life in the Dunsmuir's former home in Departure Bay. Long after the house had been demolished, I was asking Evelyn questions about her former home and the fascinating story of the Wardroper's lives came out."
