George Halpern will recount his father’s life as a fighter pilot for the Russian Air Force during the Second World War at a Nanaimo library.

Halpern’s debut book From School to Sky: Joseph’s Tale of War will be presented at the Nanaimo North Vancouver Island Regional Library on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m.

“I feel that this free event will be a wonderful experience for many in Nanaimo, especially to veterans,” noted Halpern in an e-mail.

According to a release, the author depicts when his father, Joseph, was hand-picked to be an air cadet by the Russian Air Force because of his intelligence, mechanical prowess and athletic ability, to serve the allies in trying to bring down the Nazi regime.

“He was shot down four times, and after cheating death on many occasions – and receiving many military honours – following World War II, he founded the Herzl Orphanage and helped create the Israeli Air Force,” noted the release.

Halpern is also a featured author at the JCC Jewish Book Festival in Vancouver this year and will appear at Jewish Community Centre on Feb. 12.
