If you've ever wondered how people hundreds of years ago were able to accurately map such a large and rugged island, author Michael Layland has some answers.
On Tuesday (March 4), 1:30 p.m., Layland will be speaking about his recent book titled, The Land of Heart's Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island, at the Nanaimo Museum. The Land of Heart's Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island relays the stories behind some of the 130 maps that were created between 1593 and 1915. Layland will be sharing his research and discoveries and will show off some different maps. Layland, who's originally from England, is the former president of the Friends of the B.C. Archives and Victoria Historical Society. Before moving to British Columbia over 30 years ago, Layland served in the British Army where he was trained as an officer and mapmaker for the Royal Engineers.
