The city, regional district, university and art gallery are co-operating to put on an event celebrating nature, art and sustainability.

Artful Resilience will happen Thursday, June 8, at Vancouver Island University. The afternoon of art, movies and educational opportunities is being organized by the Nanaimo Art Gallery in collaboration with VIU, the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Starting at 3 p.m., the art gallery is hosting a collaborative public art project which will use sustainable materials to weave together a mural that will be displayed publicly.

At the Malaspina Theatre building at VIU, multiple movies will be played throughout the day, starting with the Studio Ghibli classic My Neighbour Totoro at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m., multiple documentaries will be screened including Ian Mauro’s Beyond Climate, which focuses on climate change in B.C., and Walking With Plants by Trevor Dixon Bennett and Leigh Joseph.

There will be multiple other activities and educational opportunities that day. Nanaimo Area Land Trust will be there, and other activities include education about the benefits of heat pumps, a tree-planting demonstration and a tour of VIU’s Garry Oak restoration project with Caroline Josefsson, a VIU professor and botanist.

All events and activities are free and in or around the theatre building. Food trucks will be on site throughout the day.
