An expanding collective of local artists will return to Cedar for their fourth annual outdoor exhibit.
The group, known as 14 Artists by the River, will hold their one-day show on Sunday, June 12, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 1940 Burchell Rd. in Cedar.
Group member Barbara Anne Scott said that although they lost two members from last year’s show, they gained another four for this year’s show.
Scott said the group is very excited for this year after more than 500 people attended last year’s show.
Returning artists will be Scott, Lauren Kent, Janis Uvanile, Brenda Kelly, Lynda Morrison, Dennis McMahon, Frank Kobe, Lynne Wheatley, Bonnie Stebbings and Bobbi Jordan. New to this year’s show will be artists Marian Lord, Karen Evans, Bruce Farquharson and Steve Iker.
“Marian Lord is a potter. She’s actually a mature student working on a fine arts degree at VIU,” Scott said. “And Karen Evans – she’s a wonderful photographer, and she’s also a published author … Bruce Farquharson, he sculpts in Brazilian soapstone and sets a variety of semi-precious stones in sterling silver … And then we have Steve Iker, who is a retired engineer. And he likes natural beauty and wildlife. His love of nature and an engineer’s attention to detail is very evident in his work.”
According to Scott, also new this year will be the inclusion of a musical performance by Butts Giraud and the Tangerine Swing Band, Nanaimo’s Sip and Sliders Food Truck and a refreshment area.
As with previous shows, the fourth exhibition will be held on founding member Lauren Kent’s property by the Nanaimo River.
“She’s also the proud owner of the Hepburn Cottage and Studio, and that’s part of the Cedar Art Design tour for the last 14 years … It’s really due to her that we’ve got this art show going,” Scott said.
Each artist will have a tent, and like last year’s show, COVID-19 protocols will be observed. Displays will be spaced out, hand sanitizer will be available, surfaces will covered with easily cleaned plastic sheeting and contact tracing will be performed.
“We’ve got acrylic paintings, jewelry, mixed media, fabric arts, watercolours, garden art, oil and cold wax paintings, photography, handmade cards, sculpture and pottery,” Scott said. “We’ll be holding the event come rain or shine.”
