Youngsters try their luck at bullhead derby

Nanaimo Kiwanis Sunrisers host 26th annual bullhead derby Aug. 12 at Brechin Boat Ramp.

Small, ugly, wet and slimy might not cut it at most contests, but it’s the magic combination for the Nanaimo Kiwanis Sunrisers Bruno’s Bullhead Derby.

The 26th annual derby takes place Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brechin Boat Ramp.

Renamed in memory of Bruno Tonolli, a charter member of the Sunrisers who died July 8, the derby features prizes for the biggest, smallest and ugliest bullheads as well as entry prizes.

All children must be accompanied by an adult and derby participants must wear a life-jacket. Some cane fishing rods and life-jackets will be available and organizers will supply bait for the hooks.

Each derby entrant gets a hotdog and drink.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., and prizes are awarded at 1 p.m.
