Young girls helped with many of today's barriers

NANAIMO – Custom-made Mother’s Day cards help support a free program for girls.

This Mother’s Day (May 12), honour the special woman in your life and help support a free program for girls at the same time.

The Nanaimo Women’s Centre is selling custom-made Mother’s Day cards produced by Crystal Hughes, a local artist and businesswoman, with proceeds going toward the centre’s Go Girl Program.

Go Girl supports youth ages nine-13 who may be struggling with barriers such as poverty and marginalization and may also be at risk of mental health problems or substance abuse.

The centre runs week-long camps for girls at no cost to families where subjects such as decision-making, self-esteem issues, bullying and healthy boundaries are explored through activities such as role playing games, yoga, First Nations cultural teachings, arts and crafts, healthy cooking and goal setting.

Cost to run the program is about $150 per child.

Cards can be purchased for a minimum donation of $5. For more information or to buy a card, please call 250-753-0633.
