Warrior 1 and mountain poses will grace Maffeo Sutton Park as Nanaimo Yogathon takes place Sunday (July 2).

Consecutive classes will run between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and proceeds will go toward Yoga for Community Inclusion, which aims to “get people with disabilities on the mat,” says Devon Bennett, instructor and organizer.

On top of being a fundraiser, Yogathon is an opportunity to bring awareness and give people with no yoga experience the chance to try it out.

“What we’re trying to bring to people is that there’s a physical practice and a mindfulness practice, so we want to help people to incorporate the two, to use yoga to work towards meditation as well as to keep the body healthy and happy,” said Bennett.

He said there will be different styles exhibited at the event so that participants can find the right one for them.

“We wanted to get yoga to more people … the four of us this year have all got together and got in about another five or six teachers involved to get yoga to the community,” said Bennett.

Mats will be available and if people can’t donate money, canned food for Loaves and Fishes food bank will be accepted too.

Yoga for Community Inclusion is taught at OmTown Yoga Studio and allows anyone receiving Community Living B.C. services to practise.
