Work parties planned for invasive species

NANAIMO – City is raising awareness about the adverse effects of invasive plants.

In May, the City of Nanaimo is raising awareness about the adverse effects of invasive plants.

Plants such as Scotch broom and giant hogweed have the potential to negatively impact Nanaimo’s parks. Hogweed emits a toxic sap and broom is a wildfire hazard.

Work parties for plant removal are planned for Oceanview Park on Saturday (April 23), Northfield Park on Sunday, Third Street Park on May 1 and Oliver Woods Park on May 13 and 27. All cleanups are from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The city will also set up an area where residents can bring invasive plants for disposal. It will be at Bowen Park on Saturday (April 23) and May 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Invasive plants should be bagged.

If you’re interested in volunteering for a work party, please call 250-756-5200.
