People have their pick of events for the globally recognized day to celebrate women and women’s rights on Saturday (March 8).

Vancouver Island University’s Status of Women Committee and the Faculty of International Education will host a free 45-minute panel where international students from Nigeria, India and the Middle East will share the strides made in their countries. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon  in building 355, Friday (March 7).

For those looking for a sit-down lunch, Zonta Club of Nanaimo hosts its annual International Women’s Day luncheon at the Nanaimo Golf Club beginning at noon. The lunch features guest speaker Jacqui Kaese of Spotlight Academy and award presentations.

Tickets $28. Please call 250-758-2267 or e-mail info@nanaimozonta.org.

On Saturday, 10-11:30 a.m., Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell co-hosts the International Women’s Day Forum at the Grand Hotel in Nanaimo. The event is all about women inspiring women and will see special guests like former B.C. minister Ida Chong interviewed by those they’ve inspired. All proceeds go to the Haven Society.

“The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘inspiring change.’ That’s a message that I can really appreciate,” said Stilwell. “I want to host an event that gives local women from all walks of life a chance to share their stories of challenge and success.”

Tickets $20 from the Grand Hotel. Please call 250-758-3000.
