Damien Alexis devours wild salmonberries

Wild berries are plentiful around Nanaimo and the time is ripe to get out and forage.

Biologist Jessica Wolf is offering a hands-on workshop on edible berries and other plants used for food, tea and medicine Saturday (Sept. 3) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Strolling along  Nanaimo River, workshop participants learn to forage for edible wild plants and mushrooms, and sample a diversity of wild berries right from the bush. Wild teas and some plants used for medicine will also be discovered.

The workshop covers where to find these plants and recognize them in different seasons, and how to prepare and preserve them.

Cost is $30 per person and registration is limited. To reserve a spot, please e-mail wild@jessicawolf.ca or call 250-327-6931.

The workshop will be offered again Sept. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
