Wellness and volunteer fair connects new residents with their Nanaimo community

Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society and Volunteer Nanaimo build connections between newcomers and community

More than 40 exhibitors connected with Nanaimo's newest residents from around the world at the Central Vancouver Island Newcomers Wellness Fair this week.

The event at the Beban Park Social Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 5, introduced people to city parks and recreation programs, children's education organizations, local arts, culture and dance, as well as organizations supporting physical and mental health.

The event was hosted simultaneously with Volunteer Nanaimo's annual fair, which brought 20 organizations out offering people opportunities to socialize and connect with the community through literacy, education, health and service clubs.

Darrell Harvey, CVIMS board member, said according to Statistics Canada, about 40 per cent of newcomers to Canada and Canadian born residents volunteer in their communities and the newcomer wellness fair and volunteer fair "aim to foster connections between community members and organizations in a welcoming and inclusive environment."

"Local organizations benefit greatly from their time, experience and fresh perspectives, while newcomers appreciate the chance to support their new community and enhance their employability," Harvey said.
