VOLUNTEERS: Special Olympics association seeks swim coaches

NANAIMO - Several organizations in the Nanaimo are looking for help.

Muscular Dystrophy Society – The society holds its inaugural Walk for Muscular Dystrophy on Sept. 28 at Maffeo Sutton Park.  An assistant coordinator is needed to help with the promotion of event, entertainment and site activities.  Volunteers are also needed the day of the event.  Please contact Paul Lazenby at 1-250-748-4945 or e-mail at pmlazenby@gmail.com

Special Olympic Nanaimo –  Swim coaches are needed to volunteer at Beban Park Pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. between the months of September and May. Coaching or athletic experience is a benefit and a commitment of one full season is required. Bethlehem Retreat – Volunteer gardeners with a healthy back, a love and knowledge of plants are needed to help with the grounds and vegetable garden. Please contact Judi Malcolm at 250-754-3254 or e-mailbrcjmalcolm@shaw.ca

Cerebral Palsy Association – Guide companions are needed to assist one of the association’s members in learning her way around Nanaimo. Please contact Deirdre Stevens at 1-800-663-0004 or e-mail support worker@bccerebralpasly.com.

Volunteer Nanaimo Youth Volunteer Corps – Youth volunteers (ages 11-18) as well as youth leaders (ages 19-plus) are needed for a summer program that gives youth the chance to improve their community through various projects. Nanaimo Stroke Recovery – Walking companions are needed to take a client for a half an hour walk. Please contact Rose at 250-753-5328.

Mid Island Abilities and Independent Living Society –  The society is holding its second annual garage sale Aug. 24 and is seeking items to sell. The money will help support programs for people seniors and people with disabilities. To donate please call 250-756-9455.
