VIU welcomes new year

Chinese students at Vancouver Island University will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with their annual Lunar New Year Party on Friday (Feb. 4).

Festivities, including performances, games and refreshments, will be held in Malaspina Theatre, bldg. 310, from 5:30-8 p.m.

In the past, the event was held in the Richard W. Johnston Centre for International Education, but has attracted such strong attendance that a larger venue is needed.

The campus theatre will not only accommodate a larger audience, but also provide a much better view of the show.

“The sign of the rabbit is considered to be a lucky one, and judging by the excitement surrounding this Lunar New Year event, the Year of the Rabbit is starting off on a high and very positive note,” said Maurice Gallant, English Language Centre instructor.

Entertainment performed by musicians, dancers and singers will feature a variety of traditional and contemporary works from various parts of China. The evening’s finale will be a mixed performing arts piece featuring song, calligraphy and an oral reading.

There will be door prizes and refreshments and snacks as well as cultural activities in the theatre’s foyer.

There are more than 450 students from China among more than 1,500 international students at VIU.

Tickets are $5 per person or $7 for two and are on sale in the upper cafeteria and the first floor of Bldg. 255 between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
