When Josh McLennan paid his tuition at Vancouver Island University this month, it’s hard to say who was happier – him or his father.

McLennan was the lucky winner of a $1,000 tuition credit offered as a special prize during VIU’s New Student Orientation.

The first-year student is enrolled in VIU’s bachelor of arts, major in liberal studies program.

“I’m taking four courses and love it,” he said. “I chose to study liberal studies because of a comparative literature class I took in Grade 12. We learned all about art, literature, philosophy and science from early times in the world’s history.

“I found it fascinating and thought VIU’s liberal studies program would be a good extension of that. I really enjoy learning about civilizations that existed long ago.”

McLennan said it was awesome to receive the $1,000 tuition credit.

“I was pretty excited, but I think my dad was even happier,” he said.

New Student Orientation is an annual event organized by the recruitment and public engagement office of VIU’s communications and public relations department.

The next major event is Discovery Days Nov. 8-10 at the Nanaimo campus and is geared to high school students.

The goal of Discovery Days is to connect Grade 12 students with VIU so they can get a taste of what university might be like, said Joanna Hesketh, VIU’s educational partners coordinator.
