Bright lights now decorate the entrance to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, following the Light the Trees celebration put on by the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation.

The annual family event involves flipping a switch to light up the trees around the hospital for the holiday season. This year's celebration included music, hot chocolate, a toy drive and a visit from Santa Claus.

The foundation was also accepting donations for its annual winter fundraiser for a SPECT-CT scanner at a $2.9-million total. The scanner, primarily used for cancer staging and assessing ongoing treatments, reveals characteristics of diseases with information on organ size, tissue density and localization. The device works through imaging organ systems after a patient has been injected with small amounts of radioactive tracers.

Contributions can be made at www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/imaging, or by calling 250-755-7690.
