The Nanaimo Track and Field Club has come up with a way to extend the season – lighting up the stadium.

The club’s project to install lights at Rotary Bowl got a boost last week as the Rotary Club of Nanaimo presented a $10,000 cheque.

“Our club has always supported the activities here. We’ve had a particular connection with the track and field club,” said Douglas Anderson, president ot the Rotary Club of Nanaimo.

The track club wants lights on the bleacher side of the stadium, “which will shed so much light around the whole track, I think that’s all we’ll ever need,” said Tyler Heisterman, track club president.

He said the club will be able to expand its programming and practice hours and suggested other users will also benefit.

“It’s going to make it a good, safe environment,” he said. “We’ll be able to turn the lights on and do the training throughout the winter.”

The project will cost $30,000 and the track club will continue to fundraise and will use some of its own funds. Other sponsors have also contributed.
