Three fundraisers help three charities

NANAIMO: Youth group hosts a three-in-one fundraiser at University Village Mall in Harewood Saturday (Aug. 25).

A local youth group  hosts a three-in-one fundraiser at University Village Mall in Harewood Saturday (Aug. 25).

Youth Sticking Together’s barbecue/car wash/bottle drive takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot near Shoppers Drug Mart. Proceeds benefit three charities – B.C. Children’s Hospital, Kid’s Help Phone and Nanaimo Curling Centre’s youth program.

This is the first fundraiser planned in advance of the 2013 Longest Street Hockey Game Aug. 9-13.

In June, the group attempted to beat the Guiness World Record for longest street hockey game by playing for 105 hours and 17 minutes non-stop, but organizers ended the game at the 50-hour mark due to a rash of injuries.

Soon after, the board decided on a second attempt next year.

On top of the world record attempt, the group managed to raise $6,000 through various fundraisers over the past year, which was divided between Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island, Crimson Coast Dance Society and the Harewood Youth Ball Hockey League.

The group hopes to exceed that total leading up to the 2013 world record attempt.
