Community members in Nanaimo have another opportunity to be inspired by Terry Fox, go for a run or a walk, and raise money to combat cancer.
The Terry Fox Run happens Sunday, Sept. 18, in Bowen Park.
It’s the first time since before the pandemic that the community is being invited to run or walk together in the park.
“People I’ve talked to, they’re all quite excited about it being in person again,” said Jodie Williams, event organizer.
There will be a two-kilometre course set up through the park, or a 5.5km course that will also incorporate Buttertubs Marsh.
“Bowen Park, with its new renovations on the pathways, it looks really good and there’ll be lots of [room to] distance for people,” Williams said.
Registration will happen at 9 a.m. outside the Bowen Park Activity Centre, with the run/walk to start at 10 a.m. Organizers are asking people to bring their own water bottles and their smart phones, as participants can use the Pllenty platform to register free for the event, donate to the Terry Fox Foundation, buy merchandise, or all of the above.
Williams said participants in last year’s virtual Terry Fox Run in Nanaimo raised $11,000 and she’s hoping for another strong fundraising effort as she said the foundation is putting a special focus this year on children’s cancer treatments.
This is the 42nd annual Terry Fox Run in Canada for communities coast to coast to coast.
“Terry dreamed of a world without cancer – an illness that touches everyone’s lives in some capacity,” said Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother, in a foundation press release. “His legacy lives on through the passion and determination of Canadians who keep his dream alive by fundraising for cancer research without him here. We cannot quit.”
