Summer break tough on student reading skills

Research shows children who don’t read enough during the summer actually fall behind in their reading skills come September.

With summer quickly approaching, most children are counting the days until school ends and daydreaming on how to spend their class-free days.

While summer vacation is a good way for kids to take a break and refresh from classes and homework, research shows children who don’t read enough during the summer actually fall behind in their reading skills come September.

A summer reading club is available through the Vancouver Island Regional Library, offering programs to children in kindergarten to Grade 7 and a Read to Me program for preschoolers and those not reading independently.

Registration begins July 3 and for more information, please visit www.virl.bc.ca.
