Society celebrates 80 years

Eighty years of continuous church services by the Christian Science Society at 20 Chapel St. in Nanaimo will be recognized Sunday (Nov. 4).

Eighty years of continuous church services by the Christian Science Society at 20 Chapel St. in Nanaimo will be recognized Sunday (Nov. 4).

The first service in the building was held Nov. 6, 1932. Services were previously held in rented quarters in the Odd Fellows Hall on Commercial Street in 1917.

A potluck lunch to mark the 80th anniversary starts at 11:30 a.m. Visitors are welcome to share a piece of birthday cake.

Thousands of Christian Science churches, societies and reading rooms are located in more than 67 countries.

All are branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. There is no connection with the California-based Church of Scientology.
